Sonia’s Story

June 10, 2013 By FIBUSPAM Staff

12 year old Sonia Mercedes Chavez received microtia surgery free of charge in our Clinic’s operating room. Dr. Miguel Tenorio completed the complex procedure with the help of his team from Guayaquil.

A microtia is when the outer ear does not form correctly or is not present. The surgery involves the removal of rib cartilage, the fabrication of the ear structure and its insertion. Sonia’s case had additional interest in that she was a victim of child labor and was forced to work in a “camal” (slaughterhouse) during the night outside of Cuenca. She was recently rescued by a dear friend of Paul’s.

We were all thrilled to be able to help this young child to get a new start and feel it encompasses the best of what FIBUSPAM tries to accomplish for children.
